In a recent study of patients with schizophrenia, patients with bipolar disorder treated with quetiapine showed an improvement in their ability to resist medication, which is associated with improved quality of life and a lower incidence of depressive episodes.

“The improvement in quality of life and a lower incidence of depressive episodes with quetiapine was associated with a reduction in anxiety symptoms and decreased anxiety levels,” said study co-author and clinical professor of psychiatry, psychiatrist, and infectious disease specialist at the University of Pennsylvania. “These results support the notion that long-term use of quetiapine is effective in managing patients with schizophrenia.”

Quetiapine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that increases the time it takes for the serotonin transporter (SERT) to become available. This is important for the treatment of schizophrenia.

“This study suggests that the efficacy of quetiapine may be enhanced in individuals with schizophrenia who are treated with an antidepressant,” said study co-author Dr. Robert Zawin. “This study suggests that long-term use of quetiapine may be effective in managing patients with schizophrenia who are treated with an antidepressant.”

In a post-marketing study conducted in 2007 and 2008, quetiapine was shown to improve the time to first episode of mania in people with schizophrenia.

The study, conducted at the University of Pennsylvania, found that patients treated with quetiapine experienced a decrease in the number of manic episodes compared to those treated with placebo. The improvement in both groups was maintained during the study period.

Quetiapine is also available as a generic medication. Quetiapine is the brand name for the drug Seroquel, which is prescribed to treat schizophrenia.

The research was funded by the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs and was published in the June 2008 edition of the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. The research was also supported by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

“This means that, in many cases, people with bipolar disorder are at a greater risk of developing depression,” Zawin said. “The more severe the depression is, the greater the likelihood that it will develop into a major depressive episode.”

“Bipolar disorder is a complex disorder, with many genetic, biological and environmental factors. It’s not a new disease, but the number of people with it has increased in recent years,” he added.

Zawin said that a combination of treatment with antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs has been shown to improve patients with bipolar disorder.

“This combination is a new type of treatment for people with bipolar disorder,” he said.

“It’s important that people with this disorder continue to take antidepressants as a precaution, especially if they’re on the same medication.”

In addition to quetiapine, Zawin and his team are now conducting a larger study to see whether they can reduce the risk of suicidal thoughts and depression among people with bipolar disorder.

The risk of serotonin syndrome in children is unknown. Seroquel should be used in children only for adults, not in children and adolescents. In general, children are prescribed Seroquel at a dose of 50 mg once daily.
